Water Conservation 1

Water Conservation

The Town is currently at a Water Conservation level of Level 1: Normal. Details below. Thank you for practicing water wise strategies!

Water conservation is an important aspect for any community. In 2008 the Town of High River enacted a Water Conservation Bylaw.

The below information represents the different levels of water conservation and watering restrictions defined in the Water Conservation Bylaw. How the Town determines the level of water conservation is based on several factors including the condition of the aquifers and wells used by High River, ensuring that there are sufficient water reserves available in case of fires, environmental sustainability and resource protection, water quality standards, and infrastructure limitations.

Watering Days

Once the Town reaches Water Conservation Level 2 or 3, watering of lawns is only permitted between 5-10 a.m. and 7-11 p.m. on specific days for each area of town. Please refer to the map below to determine your days:

Level 1: Normal. Level 1 is currently in effect.

Residents are encouraged to practice Level 2 water-wise strategies on a voluntary basis.

Level 2: The Water Conservation Bylaw is enforced. Specific watering days are enforced.

Public announcements will be made to inform residents when they are required to follow the restrictions. Water days are:

  • SW – Monday & Thursday
  • SE – Tuesday & Friday
  • NW/NE – Wednesday & Saturday

At Level 2, residents can still fill swimming pools or use water for other recreational activities.

Hand watering of trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens is permitted at any time.

Level 3: The Water Conservation Bylaw is enforced. Specific watering days are enforced.

Public announcements will be made to inform residents when they are required to follow the restrictions and watering rotations for this level. Watering days are restricted to once per week according to the following schedule:

  • SW – Monday
  • SE – Tuesday
  • NW/NE – Wednesday

At Level 3 filling pools and other recreational facilities is no longer allowed and permits to allow extra watering for new lawns will not be issued.

Hand watering of trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens is permitted at any time.

Level 4 and 5

These levels require the most rigorous water rationing to be followed. At level 4, only watering for construction purposes is permitted and at level 5 no watering is allowed for any purpose.

New Lawn Permits

All residents must comply with the Town’s water conservation bylaw, unless they have been granted a special exception by the Town. Permits to allow watering of new lawns can be printed off below and dropped off at the Town Office (309B Macleod Trail S.W.) for processing.
