Storm water and sewer smoke tests to be completed near Emerson Lake Feb. 13-15

HIGH RIVER, AB: Calgary Sewer Scope will be performing non-toxic smoke testing in the storm water and sanitary sewers near Emerson Lake starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13.

The Town’s Utilities Division will be hand-delivering letters to residents who are located between 9 Avenue and 5 Avenue S.E. and 5A Street and 9 Street S.E. who may be affected by the tests (see map). The Town of High River Fire Department and local emergency services have also been advised that smoke testing will be taking place in the area.

The goal of the smoke tests is to identify suspected cross contamination between the sanitary and storm water sewer systems in the area. Testing is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. Friday, February 15.

Smoke testing is done by introducing non-toxic smoke along with large volumes of air through an open sanitary and storm sewer manhole. The smoke, under pressure from the blower, travels through the sewer system and escapes through exits along the way, allowing the Town to detect leaks, cracks or other connection issues.

After the test, the Town will follow up with residents or businesses who may be affected by needed future excavation and repairs identified during the testing.

While the tests are being completed, please note that the presence of smoke coming out of plumbing vent roof stacks is completely normal and is not a cause for alarm. If the plumbing systems of area homes or businesses are adequate and drain traps are full of water, smoke should not be seen indoors.

Questions or concerns can be directed to field representatives from Calgary Sewer Scope and Town Utilities who will be on-site during the smoke tests. Any other questions can be directed to Town Operations at (403) 652-4657.
