This tax rate (mill rate) generates the funds the Town of High River requires to operate the Town minus any other revenues it might receive during the course of the year. The operating budget for the year is divided by the total taxable assessments to produce the municipal tax rate.
The current property tax levy is charged a 1.5 per cent penalty on the first day of each month after the tax due date. All property tax arrears (prior year taxes) are penalized at 1.5 per cent per month.
This amount is collected by the Town of High River and paid directly to the Province of Alberta for maintenance and development of the school system. The amount of school funds paid by each Municipality is based on population and the tax base and is set by the Alberta Government. All Municipalities must collect and forward these funds.
This amount is collected by the Town of High River and paid directly to the Westwinds Communites (Foothills Foundation) to help pay for seniors housing in our area. The amount the Town of River has to pay is not within the Town’s control as this is set for us.
