Back-to-School Safety: Slow Down, Stay Alert, Share the Road
HIGH RIVER – With a new school year upon us, High River's roads will soon be a little busier. Students will be walking, biking, crossing streets, and being dropped off at schools, making it especially important for motorists to slow down and stay alert.
Remember: 30 km/h means 30 km/h
School and playground zones in our community are 30 km/h, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
There are no school-hour exceptions to remember. Whether you're driving to work on a Monday morning or passing through a playground on a Saturday night, the speed limit is 30km/h.
A Few Reminders for Motorists
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and give them plenty of space.
- Watch for crossing guards, cyclists and pedestrians, particularly around school entrances and crossings.
- Follow all distracted driving laws.
- Follow all posted signage and speed limits.
- Allow extra time for your trip during school drop-off and pick-up times.
- Stay patient and expect increased vehicle and foot traffic around schools.
High River's Peace Officers will be conducting patrols throughout the community in the coming months and throughout the school year. Drivers who do not follow speed limits or other traffic laws may face fines and demerit points.
Most importantly, these reminders are about more than avoiding a ticket. Every driver plays a role in helping students and families get to and from school safely.
Slow down. Stay alert. Share the road.
And remember… drive like your teachers are watching… because our Peace Officers are.
