This summer is shaping up to have long stretches of extreme heat events. When possible, plan to reduce time spent outdoors during peak heat, drink plenty of water, avoid leaving people or pets in parked vehicles and find ways to stay cool.

The Town has cooling stations to help people find relief during extreme heat events. These are indoor, air-conditioned spaces with access to free water and some other amenities to help take a break from the heat.

Weekdays

  • FCSS Resource Centre: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Greater Foothills Family Centre: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Evenings and weekends

  • Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex: Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 pm

  • High River Library: Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Visitor Information Centre - Museum of the Highwood: Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Tips to beat the heat

  • Limit strenuous activities: Avoid non-essential, strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Choose indoor activities instead, like the walking track at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol: These can worsen dehydration. Stick to water and hydrating foods.

  • Stay cool and hydrated: Drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and use fans or air conditioning to stay cool. If you're in the area, you can refill your water bottle at the filling station attached to the log cabin at the Brian Perry Youth Park.

  • Manage indoor temperatures: Close window shades or blinds to block out the sun and keep cool air inside. Open windows in the evening to let cooler air in.
