Know Before You Ride: Understanding Alberta’s Rules & Regulations for Small Vehicles
HIGH RIVER – Not every small vehicle is treated the same under Alberta regulations.
While many small vehicles may look alike, they are classified differently based on how they are built and designed. That classification determines where they can be operated and whether they require a driver’s licence, registration, insurance or a helmet to operate.
The province has indicated that miniature vehicles are not permitted on highways, public roads, sidewalks or pathways. These include pocket bikes, go-karts, electric scooters, golf carts, personal transporters, and electric e-dirt bikes. Miniature vehicles also cannot be registered to be used on Alberta roads. These vehicles may only be operated on private property unless otherwise authorized under provincial and municipal bylaws.
In addition to Alberta legislation, the Town of High River Traffic Bylaw (4563/2019 – sections 20 & 43) includes local rules for certain vehicle types. Off-highway vehicles (i.e. all-terrain vehicles, snow vehicles, mini-bikes) are not permitted on any roadway, sidewalk, boulevard, park, or urban reserve within the town. Powered bicycles (commonly referred to as e-bikes) may only be operated on roadways and are not permitted on sidewalks or the Happy Trails pathway system.
