Growing Together: Caring for High River's Parks and Natural Spaces
HIGH RIVER – The Town is proud to provide residents with beautiful parks, pathways, trees, flower displays, and natural spaces that make High River a welcoming place to live, work, and visit. Keeping these spaces healthy and vibrant requires the care of our staff and the support of residents who help protect and respect them.
Recently, the Town has experienced damage to public property, including unauthorized chemical use, impacts to tree health, and the removal of flowers from community displays. Here are a few reminders to help protect the spaces we all enjoy.
Help Protect Our Green Spaces
While some products available at local stores may be used on private property, chemicals cannot be applied on Town property, including:
- Parks and green spaces
- Sidewalks and pathways
- Utility rights-of-way
- Natural areas and public spaces
Chemical applications on public property must only be completed by certified and licensed professionals. To protect our waterways, chemicals cannot be used within 30 metres of any body of water unless applied by qualified professionals following approved practices and procedures.
A quick spray may seem harmless, but the wrong product or application can have lasting impacts on trees, vegetation, wildlife, and the environment.
Respect the Spaces We Share
High River's parks, pathways, natural areas, and flower displays are shared spaces for everyone to enjoy. While our Parks team works hard to maintain safe and welcoming areas, not every green space is meant to be a freshly cut lawn. Natural areas around rivers, lakes, and waterways provide important habitat for wildlife and help support healthy ecosystems. Sometimes the best thing we can do for nature is let it grow.
The Town also plants seasonal flowers throughout the community to add colour and brighten public spaces. Recently, flowers have been removed from community displays. While they may look great in your garden, they look even better helping brighten High River for everyone to enjoy.
Before you spray, disturb, or take — think twice. Together, we can keep High River growing beautifully.
