Tree and Hedge Trimming:
As the weather warms up, many of us are out enjoying the fresh air but dodging overgrown trees and hedges - not so fun! By taking a few moments to check your property, you can keep sidewalks safe and accessible for all—especially those with wheelchairs, strollers, or mobility aids.
- See Clearly, Drive Safely – Trim trees and hedges near driveways, alleys, and intersections to ensure a clear view of traffic for you and your neighbours.
- Clear the Path – Prune back any branches or hedges encroaching on sidewalks so pedestrians can safely use the entire width of the pathways.
- Mind the Roads – Keep streets and alleys clear of low-hanging branches to prevent vehicle damage and ensure road signs are visible.
The Town of High River is responsible for pruning trees and hedges on Town property (i.e. boulevards). To verify if a tree or hedge is on Town property or to report any boulevard tree that requires pruning, please get in touch with the Parks division at 403.652.4042
A little spring pruning goes a long way in keeping our community safe and walkable for everyone.
Spring Maintenance for Homeowners & Residents
Interior Spring Home Maintenance Tips:
Check the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms:
With the changing seasons, it's a great time to check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries, test their functionality, and call a professional if you spot any issues.
General Spring Cleaning
- Deep clean the oven and fridge and sort through your pantry. Pro tip: If you have non-perishable food you haven't used, donate it to the local food bank and help put food on a family's table!
- Dust/Vacuum chairs, window casings, cabinets and ceiling fans.
- Wash fabrics or drapes.
- Use a damp cloth to clean wood and vinyl blinds.
- Consider renting a carpet clean for a fresh-smelling house.
Check Your AC:
Spring is the ideal time to ensure your AC or HVAC system is running smoothly. Don't wait for the summer heat to inspect all connections, replace the filter, and schedule professional maintenance if needed.
Test Electrical Panel:
Electrical panels are easy to overlook during home maintenance, but regular inspections can help prevent future problems. Check yours periodically, and if you notice any issues or aren't sure what to look for, call a professional.
Head-up to the Attic:
If your home has an attic, regular checks are a must. Look for leaks from melting snow, inspect for signs of mice, insects, or other pests that may have settled in over the winter, and ensure your insulation is dry and intact.
Inspect Your Basement:
Basements are especially vulnerable to issues when the seasons change. To catch problems early, regularly inspect yours for foundation cracks, leaks, or mould, particularly around windows.
Look for Leaks and Signs of Mould:
It's crucial to check for leaks and mould throughout your home. Inspect windows, doors, bathrooms, and any areas prone to water damage. If you find any issues, take care of them right away.
Clear Out Clutter:
The holiday season can leave you with more than memories—clutter adds up quickly! Spring is the perfect time to tackle your garage, basement, and other storage spaces. Clear out the excess by donating to local charities, selling items online, or passing them along to family and friends.
Outdoor Spring Home Maintenance Tips:
Check Your Roof:
Keeping your roof in top shape is essential. Damage to shingles, flashing, or leaks can quickly lead to more significant issues. Check for missing, torn, or curling shingles to prevent costly repairs down the road. Clean out the gutters and downspouts.
Inspect the Foundation From the Outside:
Do a quick walk around your house and ensure the foundation has no cracks or damage. If you identify issues, contact a professional.
Check the Chimney:
If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, it is crucial that you check the chimney and the unit for blockages or damage.
Spring Yard Maintenance:
Prepare the Lawn, Trees and Greenery:
Do a quick walkthrough of your property. Look for and trim any branches, bushes, or hedges near your building, the street, or a sidewalk.
Fence and Deck Maintenance:
Look for signs of damage, such as cracked or split boards, unstable areas, and pest damage.
Get Out the Outdoor Furniture and BBQ:
Bring out and clean up your patio furniture, clean your BBQ, and ensure your propane tank is in good working condition and is not expired.
Check Outdoor Lights:
Check outdoor lights and motion sensors to ensure they function correctly and replace bulbs when necessary.
Beaver Protection:
Wrap your trees with metal mesh (3 to 4 feet high) to prevent any damage from beavers. Please remember to give beavers their space and do not approach them. Residents can report beaver sightings to Public Works.
