Protect Our Elm Trees – Pruning Season Ends March 31

HIGH RIVER – Our community is home to part of Alberta’s incredibly valuable elm tree population, one of the largest disease-free elm populations in the world. Protecting these trees starts with all of us.

Elm tree pruning season officially ends March 31. From April 1 to September 30, pruning is not permitted as elm bark beetles become active during this time. These beetles are attracted to fresh cuts and can spread disease to healthy trees, often killing them within a year.

Why it Matters:
Elm trees are a vital part of our community’s natural landscape. Preventing the spread of disease helps preserve tree canopy, supports local ecosystems, and keeps High River green and thriving for future generations.

If you are planning pruning work, be sure to complete it before the deadline and always hire a qualified arborist. Look for:

  • ISA certification
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proper permits and licenses
  • References and multiple estimates
  • Avoid door-to-door offers that seem too good to be true

Visit the Town’s Trees and Natural Spaces webpage to learn more about proper tree care and how you can help protect High River’s urban forest.
