Seasonal Safety Reminder - Be Prepared for Freeze-Thaw Conditions:
As temperatures fluctuate throughout the winter and early spring, freeze-thaw cycles can create changing conditions across High River. Staying informed and taking a few simple precautions can help keep your property, your neighbourhood, and your family safe.
Freeze-Thaw & Water Build Up
Freezing temperatures followed by warmer weather can cause water to pool on residential streets, private driveways, local pathways and sidewalks. While this can be inconvenient, it is not considered an emergency unless water begins entering your home. Town crews have implemented measures to help keep storm drains thawed so water can flow properly through the system.
Leave Snow on Your Property
Whenever possible, keep snow on your lawn or garden. Melting snow helps retain moisture and supports healthier grass and plants during the summer months.
Elm Tree Pruning Reminder
Elm tree pruning is permitted and encouraged between Oct. 1 and March 31. Proper pruning helps protect and maintain High River’s elm tree population. For more information on Elm tree pruning, including tips for hiring an arborist, please visit highriver.ca/natural-spaces.
Ice Safety – Choose a Safer Place to Skate
Due to frequent freeze-thaw cycles, ice on public lakes and storm ponds can be unpredictable and unsafe. Skating on natural bodies of water is highly discouraged, as conditions can change quickly without warning. Important: Town staff, including the High River Fire Department, do not check or monitor ice thickness on natural water bodies.
Residents are encouraged to use the new outdoor rink, which offers a maintained, purpose-built space for skating and hockey throughout the winter season.
For younger skaters and those learning to skate, the George Lane Park ice surface provides a smaller, more beginner-friendly environment.
Choosing designated ice surfaces helps reduce risk and ensures a safer winter experience for everyone. Thank you for helping keep High River safe, resilient, and ready for winter.
