(HIGH RIVER, AB) At the January 27 regular council meeting, Councillor Kelly Smit announced her decision to resign from the Town of High River Council, effective immediately, as per the Municipal Government Act.
A first-time councillor, Smit is relocating with her family to Fernie, British Columbia, to begin a new chapter in their lives.
“There have been some incredible moments as a member of Council, and many learning experiences as well. No one can fully prepare you for the highs and lows that come with putting yourself out there as a member of Council,” says Smit.
While Smit’s resignation leaves a vacancy on Town Council, no by-election will be held due to the upcoming municipal election in October.
“Our collective mandate has always been to serve this town responsibly—spending wisely, building thoughtfully, and creating a community that others admire. I’m deeply grateful for the life-enriching moments I’ve experienced as part of this Council and this amazing community,” Smit added.
Since beginning her term in Fall 2021, Smit played a key role in guiding the Town through the challenges of COVID-19. She also spearheaded several community engagement initiatives, such as Coffee with Council and others that fostered connections between residents and the Town.
We extend our best wishes to Smit and her family as they start their new journey in Fernie. Her leadership and contributions have made a lasting impact and will continue to be upheld in the community.
