High River to Set Up Cooling Stations for Heat Relief
HIGH RIVER – The Town of High River will set up cooling stations to help people find relief during the extreme temperatures we may continue to experience this summer.
Residents are reminded to stay hydrated and safe as temperatures rise. When possible, plan ahead to minimize your time outdoors, drink lots of water, avoid leaving people or pets in the car, and find ways to keep cool.
The Town’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Resource Centre, Greater Foothills Family Centre, High River Library, and the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex are cooling places for residents to take a break from the heat.
Weekdays:
- FCSS Resource Centre (Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm)
- Greater Foothills Family Centre – (Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm)
- High River Library (Monday & Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm | Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm)
Evenings and weekends:
- Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex (Monday – Friday, 6:00 am to 10:00 pm | Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm)
Tips to Beat the Heat:
- Limit Strenuous Activities: Avoid non-essential, strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for indoor activities instead.
- Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: These can worsen dehydration. Stick to water and hydrating foods.
- Stay Cool and hydrated: Drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and salads and use fans and air conditioners to stay cool.
- Manage Indoor Temperatures: Close window shades or blinds to block out the sun and keep cool air inside. Open windows in the evening to let cooler air in.
- Protect Your Pets: Keep pets indoors and ensure they stay hydrated. Never leave pets in vehicles.
