HIGH RIVER, AB – The Town of High River is seeking feedback from residents and business owners on a proposed Pilot Entertainment District in the downtown area.
Entertainment Districts are designated public areas where adults can consume alcohol while enjoying entertainment options within defined boundaries. If approved, a pilot period for the district would be scheduled from June 1 to December 31, 2024. The district would only be operational during special events, activated by applicants during the permit process.
The proposed district would encompass the downtown area (view the FAQ for boundary details). Alcoholic beverages would be purchased from licensed establishments served in non-glass containers and would need to be consumed within the boundary.
Here are some bylaw restrictions that would be in place with an active Entertainment District:
- As per the Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act, smoking is not permitted within areas of entertainment, including Entertainment Districts. Anyone smoking while the Entertainment District is in operation will need to step outside the boundary.
- Alcohol must be purchased from an existing licensed establishment within the district. It cannot be brought into the district for consumption.
- Designated cups may be used to mitigate enforcement and reduce glass bottle waste.
The Town will have an information booth with more information on March 2 at the 2024 Showcase High River event.
